The Flu Goes Through a Company Like a Hurricane Through the Trees

By Barbara Haydon, BSN, MBA, Vice President of Clinical Services

Coughing, sneezing, and aching and shaking…sure sounds like the flu to me.

It’s time to organize your 2012 -2013 flu program! Each year the seasonal influenza (“flu”) takes a heavy toll on a company’s workforce . The only measure proven to reduce the incidence and severity of flu is the flu vaccine. One of the most common ways that a person is immunized with the flu vaccine is a “flu shot”.

The vaccine usually consists of three strains identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from research and evidence gathered from the Southern Hemisphere. In two weeks after a person is immunized, the vaccine becomes effective and resistance to the flu is developed, protecting the individual.

The best time to administer the flu vaccine is when it first becomes available – usually in the early fall. Seasonal flu generally crests January through February, but may peak as early as October or as late as May, as it did this year.

Costs associated with lost time at work, the potential impact on people with concurrent illness, and the probability of the flu hitting a workplace make “an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure.”

Provant Health Solutions can provide flu immunization services to your entire employee population, in every state and Canada, and across all work shifts.   Our staff of highly skilled and qualified professionals will fully coordinate your onsite flu clinic – from scheduling and set-up to clean-up and safe disposal of all materials.
